I was thinking in the shower the morning after shooting these photos about self-portraiture and selfies and wondered why people, are obsessed with taking pictures of themselves these days.
Selfie culture has come to disturb portraiture in photography; when we take a selfie, we stop seeing what is in front of us and most importantly, who is in front of us in order to immortalize what we are missing out. Portraiture and self-portraiture done the right way, is an experience immortalized in a frame.
In these series, Winona and I explored the beauty of imperfection, the rawness of your own reflection up close, the struggle and forgiveness of being personal with your reflection and how those experiences get immortalized between clarity and confusion. It’s way more important to know how to be with ourselves and make a self-portrait than taking a selfie.
