Here’s another set of fine art photos from a recent trip to Oaxaca.
Sierra Madre de Oaxaca or Sierra Juarez is a range of mountains in the northern part of the state of Oaxaca extending to other 2 states to the north and north-east. It is the home to a few of the richest indigenous communities in the region and the country, most famously the Zapoteca, the Mixteca and the Mixe.
With a bit of general knowledge out of the way, I feel fascinated by the vastness of the mountain system in the sierra. It looks warm and familiar at first, the easy slopes in the small hills are inviting but then, the dark areas in the forest and the steep cliffs from deep inside the mountains reveal it’s dangerous nature.
This is just a very, very small part of la Sierra; these photos were shot on a brief day-trip around it but it planted a seed for a project I would like to follow up on and continue to make me reconnect with my roots.
